Homeowners have fences installed for privacy, visual appeal, or for the safety of pets and children. If done well, fences are one of the key landscaping features that increase property values.
Before planning and purchasing your fence materials, ask yourself these questions:
•What will the function of the fence be?
•What style will best accomplish this function?
•What style and material will blend with my landscaping and the architecture of my home?

Before proceeding, a few preliminary steps are in order:
•Discuss your plans with any neighbors whose property lies along your proposed fence line to make sure your fence is on your property.
•Before beginning any excavation, check for underground utilities. Call the North America One Referral Service at 1-888-258-0808 (or just dial 811) for a national directory of utility companies.
•Check local zoning laws, which may regulate the size and placement of your fence. If you live in a historic district, check with your neighborhood association before proceeding with your plans.
•Apply for the proper building permit as directed by local code.
Some of these great fence installation pictures should provide you with ideas for your own fence installation projects.
There are different fence panels available, which may differ in the details. However, there are three major preassembled fence panel styles to choose from:
•Solid: This style, when used as containment fencing, allows for complete privacy. It's commonly used to surround swimming pools and between property lines. It may also be used to conceal unsightly areas or to hide a major roadway from view. These fences are generally 4 feet to 6 feet tall and use very closely spaced pickets, which may vary in style from a basic dog-ear style to a pointed top or elaborate design.
•Spaced Picket: This is ideal for keeping children or pets in and defining boundaries, while achieving a distinctive look and aesthetic appeal. These fences are generally shorter, 4 feet tall or less, and don't completely block the surrounding view.
•Shadowbox: This style uses alternating panels across the back and front to give the fence the same look on both sides. This is an ideal neighborly fence style since a person on the other side will have a pleasant view of it as well. These fences are generally taller, usually around 6 feet. They have the look of a full containment fence but also allow more air circulation.
It's important to communicate with your neighbors when you're thinking of building a new fence.

You may be within your rights to put up a fence whether your neighbor agrees or not, as long as it's on your property, but if you talk about it with your neighbors beforehand, you can probably come to an understanding. You may even find that the neighbor is willing to help pay for the fence in order to get something he or she doesn't mind looking at every day.

Another question of "fence etiquette" is which side of the fence should face the neighbor? With some fences - chain link, for example - this doesn't matter. But if the fence includes posts and crossbars, like most wood fences, then there is an "inside" and an "outside" of the fence. The neighbor should see the outside of your fence, which is the more attractive side. This will also prevent intruders from climbing right over.

If you're the one putting up the fence, it is your responsibility to maintain it. If it needs painting or some slats need to be repaired, take care of it right away and don't make your neighbors look at an eyesore.

Also, be sure to contact your local neighborhood association, or HOA, to see if there are any restrictions on the type or height of fencing allowed or specific procedures you must follow to get approval.
